George Lincoln Rockwell

Hello and welcome to American Dissident Voices, I'm Shaun Walker.

I had an interesting weekend. I have admired George Lincoln
Rockwell since I first read his book White Power back in the
1980s. I bought my copy of White Power from the sponsor of this
program, National Vanguard Books. The very birth of National
Vanguard Books in 1970 was in Arlington, Virginia, where Dr.
William Pierce moved when he was working fulltime for George
Lincoln Rockwell. I had an opportunity to visit Arlington with a
guided tour from probably the one man alive that knows that
history the very best; Matt Koehl.

Before I jump into today's show too quickly, let me give some
background information about George Lincoln Rockwell to the
people in our audience who are not familiar with this great
American. Rockwell is famous, around the world, for founding the
American Nazi Party. The organization was formed in 1959 in
Arlington, Virginia, in the house he lived in on Randolph Street.
Founding an organization with such a controversial name and
ideology was not enough to gain world-wide him fame, however. The
reason Rockwell became famous was his many abilities. I will talk
today about Rockwell's legacy, his time spent in Arlington, and
the pros and cons of the American Nazi Party.

From all accounts, Rockwell had a normal childhood. He joined the
US Navy to fight for America when the Second World War started
and was a combat veteran in both the Pacific and Atlantic
Theaters of the war. He was again called to active duty during
the Korean War. Afterwards he published a magazine for the wives
of American servicemen. He was a capable publisher and a brave
man. He had charm and charisma and was a man of high bearing. He
was also a very patriotic man who was racially conscious.

Because of the anti-White changes that were taking place in the
1950's Rockwell became alarmed, then he became involved. He chose
a path to help the White race that has now become a legend.
Perhaps his natural boldness forced him to use this forceful
approach to leap into our cause. But one thing that is certain,
Rockwell changed the way Americans look at the White racial
struggle forever.

The house on Randolph Street where the American Nazi Party
started is now gone. In fact the entire neighborhood has been
changed from two-story, framed houses to high-rise towers. Much
of downtown Arlington would not be recognizable to Rockwell. The
racial demographics have changed dramatically since then too. In
Rockwell's day Arlington was a White city and even the police --
openly and in public -- used words such as "Nigger" without any
second thought about the matter.

Rockwell's Arlington did not have the large groups of non-Whites
from every race that have since moved in. There were a few Blacks
in the run-down parts of town, but there was virtually no race
mixing. Today race mixing, even in this Southern state, is
rampant. This was the future that Rockwell correctly predicted
and this is why he turned his house into the headquarters for the
American Nazi Party: to prevent the race-suicide that he foresaw.

The place on Randolph Street that became the first headquarters
for this new political party has no markers today. It has slipped
down the memory hole.

Matt Koehl, who originally joined with Rockwell in 1960, moved to
their headquarters in 1963 and has many interesting stories of
what occurred there. Some of the stories sounded exactly like the
struggle we are in today. So many things never change. Rockwell's
history needs to be recorded and a very interesting movie
portraying these events needs to be made. But, this will all
happen in due time.

In 1965 Rockwell acquired a more private location in Arlington
for the staff to live. It was an interesting time in America.
Racial tension in America was coming to a boil and the socially
disruptive elements were becoming more problematic. This in
itself started to wake up a small group in America and it started
to support Rockwell. With this new support a large house was
acquired which sat on the highest peak in Arlington. This house
was a large three-story wood framed house, secluded on 26 acres,
which had room for printing operations and for housing. The
location was a 15 minute drive from Washington DC. In fact on the
roof of this house, on the widows-walk, you could see the
Washington Monument.

Rockwell wanted the members of the party staff to be on call as a
small, standing army for political street activity. This larger
house was called the "party barracks" and housed many of
Rockwell's "Storm Troopers." This house on the hill gained a
nickname in 1965 when four Negroes accidentally drove their car
up there and were confronted by the duty officer with his M-1
carbine rifle. From that day forward the people in Arlington
called the place "Hatemonger Hill." This was a parody on a line
from a Negro song. It became, "I found my thrill, on Hatemonger
Hill."

This merry band of "Nazi Storm Troopers" had their barracks 3
miles away from their headquarters and they did most of their
shopping across the street at the closest strip mall. Here was
Tom's Barber Shop, which is where the Nazi's got their hair cut.
Tom has long since left, but the barber shop still has his name.
Two stores down was a coin operated laundromat that is now a
dry-cleaners. Nothing there marks this laundromat as anything
special. This place, in 1967, was just a normal strip mall in
White America that had the American Nazi Party barracks across
the street.

The driveway to Hatemonger Hill is the original driveway, but
today the city of Arlington owns the land. There is a sign to
tell people that it is unlawful to be in this park after-hours.
This sign is written in English and Spanish. In fact, right where
this sign is was where Rockwell was almost killed in June, 1967.

A barricade was made in the driveway one day, and when Rockwell
stopped to remove the obstacles, two men in the bushes shot at
Rockwell. The slug from a .38 barely missed Rockwell and ended up
in the driver's seat. Rockwell, and the other "Storm Trooper"
present chased these two men, but they got away. Two months
later, when Rockwell was doing his laundry, he was shot dead. He
walked out of the laundromat to get more soap and the killer was
on the roof with a Mauser pistol. After shooting Rockwell, he
dropped the pistol and ran down into a canyon beside the strip
mall. He ran over a mile before he was caught. The two brave
Whites that chased him and caught him were Tom the owner of the
barbershop and Tom's assistant. Neither of them were members of
the Nazi Party, but both were honest citizens and friendly with
Rockwell.

I felt sad standing there in the parking lot where Rockwell had
fallen. This man's words, both spoken and written have been
inspiring White men and women for over a half a century now.
There must be two dozen songs that young White Power bands have
written about him, not only in the U.S. but all over the world.
This man deserves a monument erected in his honor yet there is no
visible sign left of him in Arlington.

The man that was showing me these places and telling me these
stories was, in 1967, the Nazi Party secretary; this was the
number two position in the party. Matt Koehl, and the other 16
leading members of the party, including Dr. William Pierce, came
to the unanimous decision that Matt Koehl should take on the
leadership of the party after Rockwell was gunned down.

The party itself had already undergone a name change in 1967.
Rockwell had become a household name in America and he raised a
great deal of the party's money through his speaking tours;
mostly at American universities. But with all of Rockwell's fame,
with interviews on TV and radio, with even an interview in
Playboy magazine, Rockwell had a big problem. This problem was so
big, that Rockwell had to change the name of the organization
from the American Nazi Party to something else. Rockwell picked
the new name: the National Socialist White People's Party. Dr.
William Pierce didn't agree with Rockwell's choice of name, but
I'll get to that a later.

Rockwell's problem is still a problem that White America has
today. This problem is not a simple one. How do we speak the
truth about race and the Jews in America, without the Jews using
their powerful media to demonize, denigrate and defame us? This
problem was a problem immediately after World War Two ended. The
Jews didn't waste anytime consolidating their power in America.
They then went on the attack against the White Americans who had
just saved the Jews in Europe. The Jews have never felt gratitude
towards any non-Jew that has helped Jews and this is a painful
lesson that White America is dealing with today.

In fact, the first group of Americans that formed a group in
America on purely racial lines was a group founded in Georgia by
Emory Burke called the "Columbians." This group, founded in 1946,
was short lived. They had a great deal of support quickly,
especially in Atlanta, which was having a big problem with Blacks
moving into White areas. Emory Burke and his Columbians attracted
audiences of several thousand in and around Atlanta, Georgia, but
he was subsequently railroaded by the Jewish-lead government.
Emory Burke spent some time in jail for the most idiotic charges.
After his arrest the Columbian's were disbanded. The
Jewish-dominated media in America would call anyone a "Nazi" if
he say anything critical about the Jews even back then.

In the mid-1950s Rockwell discovered that the people who were
tearing apart White America were the Jews. He also saw the newly
created social taboo that the Jews had invented and were using
against White America. The Jews knew they had to keep a lid on
the truth about their goals and activities or Whites would rise
up and overthrow the them. To prevent this, the taboo against
mentioning Jews was coupled with massive character assassination.
Their favorite defaming word to label anyone who stands up for
White people and says anything critical of the Jews is "Nazi."

Rockwell was an honest and bold man and he finally decided that
the Jews were going to call him a "Nazi" anyway, so he might as
well just call himself a "Nazi." This is quite a bit of an over
simplification, but Rockwell faced this problem in the 1950's,
just as Emory Burke did in the 1940's.

The problem of being defamed and demonized by the Jewish media
has another negative side effect. There are some White people
that are antisocial and are attracted by the very negativity that
the Jewish media smears us with. These antisocial people do not
understand the bigger picture, but become a part of our racial
struggle for all the wrong reasons. Once these antisocial people
start to interact with the larger, healthy, positive element in
our struggle, they cause problems. George Lincoln Rockwell was
shot dead by John Patler, who has been a staff member of
Rockwell's. He was very disruptive and after several disruptions
was kicked out of the party.

There are some people who know many of the details surrounding
this event. And there are many interesting tidbits to bring up
regarding the FBI and the Cointelpro operations that the FBI was
waging against Rockwell at that time. Some believe that Patler
was being pushed and motivated by a larger government operation.
There has been a lot of evidence that has come to light in the
last 38 years that proves the FBI was, in fact, using spies to
harm Rockwell and his organization. Hopefully we will have the
truth one day, but until that day comes, the important lesson
here is to see these patterns.

When a pro-White group begins to make progress, to gain a great
deal of media, and starts to wake up White America, the
disruptive elements always seem to suddenly do as much harm as
possible. Most of this is done with a fury of non-stop lies and
character assassination. But, that in itself is a very important
topic that we will discuss in a later show. The government
Cointelpro operations which were active during Rockwell's time
have officially ended, but only in name.

Cointelpro was active when Rockwell had to deal with the gossip
and disruption in his day. Within his organization he had several
large empire builders, such as the "Allen Faction." These
factions and people were actually convinced that Rockwell was a
sell out and worse, so they broke away from the Rockwell's party
when Rockwell was still alive. These and other break away
factions never amounted to anything after they broke off. They
only weakened Rockwell's organization and caused a lot of good
people to get disgusted with all the petty gossip. If there is
one universal truth it is this: old women and
pseudo-revolutionaries love to gossip.

For me this tour through Arlington was at times amusing. Matt
Koehl's stories about certain individuals who were disruptive,
about police harassment, about organizational difficulties, and
about ideological conflicts, back in the 1960s, sounded all too
familiar. I could so easily relate those people and events to
people and events I've run across.

Matt Koehl, at 70-years-old has such a quick and detailed memory.
He had a unique vantage point in history for these events and is
one of the few who can honestly tell the world what took place in
Arlington.

With all the difficulties involved with our struggle, Matt Koehl
has never lost sight of our cause. It was both an educational
visit to the birth place of the American Nazi Party and a
spiritual one as well. I have rarely been so interested with all
the minor details and surroundings of an area I was in. I felt my
senses were actually more acute. This visit was quite different
because it was here that Rockwell started out and died and it was
here that the National Alliance was born.

The National Alliance was created because of the same problem
that Emory Burke faced, that Rockwell faced, and that we all
still face today. We have to stand up for our race and we cannot
save the White race unless we are willing to say racist things
and stand fast to those statements like a granite wall. We can
never deny that our goals our for the benefit of the White race;
therefore we will be called every name that is associated with
racism. We cannot change this reality. It is the same with every
group that has any representation.

Take for example someone that represents grain farmers. For this
person to go to Washington to lobby on behalf of grain farmers,
he must say the words "grain farmers" many times. It would be
impossible for a grain farmers' lobbyist to succeed in helping
grain farmers if he is embarrassed or afraid to talk openly and
in great depths about grain and grain farmers. In fact, such a
person needs to talk with enthusiasm and persuasion to be
effective. Yet, this is the 60-year-old failure some Right Wing
Republicans have attempted. They have proven to the world they
are a failure -- even when they passively pretend to care about
White people on occasion.

Rockwell knew that it was impossible to talk to America about the
race issue, from a pro-White point-of-view, and not be vilified.
Rockwell knew that to criticize the power that the Jews wield
over America would be impossible without saying the word "Jew."
When the media has such power over the minds of Americans, trying
to break down false social taboos is an enormous task. It cost
Rockwell his life. And every White man and women should remember
and honor this great man.

Thirty-eight years after Rockwell's assassination, we still have
these same problems. The Jews demonize our message. There is an
army of government agents, snitches, and agents provocateur that
are paid very well to create malicious gossip. Our enemies were
able to create a hostile atmosphere of anger and distrust against
Rockwell when he was at his absolute peak and getting the message
out to America at an incredible level. These government agents,
and private Jewish groups which are set up to hold us down, have
vast resources at their disposal and they know what they are
doing.

Rockwell's only real shortcoming was with his trust in the FBI.
At the time, in the 1960's, Communism was such a threat that
Rockwell saw the FBI as an ally. The FBI was against Communism,
but it was also against White separatism. This is actually a
bigger problem today. The FBI doesn't have any real Communists to
worry about anymore, so they direct more of their attention to
the most credible dissidents: you and me.

The problem that Rockwell had with balancing honesty on the race
and Jewish problems while maintaining a message that could reach
White people in an uncorrupted context was dealt with by Dr.
William Pierce and, ultimately, by the National Alliance. Dr.
Pierce argued with Rockwell on this point. Rockwell was a purist
and felt that if you changed, even a little, to make the message
more presentable to the public it amounted to softening the
message. Rockwell, and many others, saw how the so-called "Right"
in the 1950's had no concern with the White race and were
subservient to the Jews. Rockwell was rightfully disgusted at the
endless compromises and directionless behavior of the Right Wing.
He came to the correct conclusion that the Right Wing leadership
in America is just as much of a problem as is the Left Wing. This
was one reason for Rockwell's desire to stick to using the
swastika. But, at the same time, Rockwell had to admit, that one
could get nothing accomplished without flexibility.

By 1966 Rockwell appeared in public smartly dressed in a new suit
without the swastika. He would speak to an audience of several
thousand interested White college students and make many good
points to them. Rockwell had completed phase one, the shock value
phase, to gain name recognition and had started the second phase
which took on a more serious demeanor. This is a very important
lesson that still needs to be learned by many thousands of
activists today.

Rockwell knew that the wearing of a swastika in public would not
attract many serious people of high quality. His untimely death
was partially a result of this. For us to make change in today's
world, we can not reinvent or try to breathe life back into an
organization that has since passed. We can take the very best
ideas from that organization and incorporate them into our
ideology, however. Rockwell struggled with this problem and so
did Dr. William Pierce. Dr. Pierce used the term "Third Reich
Enthusiast" to describe people that were attracted to the
cosmetic aspects and imagery of Nazi Germany, the collectibles,
and so on. They have little concern about or understanding of our
cause. There are, however, many people who do fully understand
our cause and who are actively involved in helping the White race
who also have an interest in that era of Germany. And there are
many good people who have no real interest in the collectibles of
Nazi Germany or the events of the Second World War, but who have
a great deal of interest in the ideological aspects of National
Socialism and who are also contributing to our cause today.

Rockwell's successor, Matt Koehl, who is a friend of mine, today
runs an organization called the New Order. Mr. Koehl is an
intelligent and serious gentleman, but the New Order is more of a
spiritual, National Socialist association. They don't have
membership, nor are they politically active, but they are a
repository of the purest ideological form of National Socialism.
I'm glad they exist. Matt Koehl makes sure to distance himself
from any antisocial element and continues his work with research
and networking for National Socialism. His stewardship of
Rockwell's legacy has been an honorable one.

Dr. Pierce and Matt Koehl were friends when Dr. Pierce died and I
contacted him several years ago. I was quite happy that Mr. Koehl
would meet up with me in Arlington and help fill in so many
blanks for me. We spent most of our time talking about the
challenges ahead and the conflict between pure theoretical
ideology versus ideology applied to political change. Mr. Koehl
is a man that has been active in politics since the 1950's and is
a fountain of information. I learned many things during this
visit. Mr. Koehl and I would like to honor Rockwell in a more
formal manner and there are a few ideas that we are working on
right now.

Another man who deserves to be honored, and will be honored this
summer, is Emory Burke. The family and friends of this stand-up
White man will be holding a memorial for him in the South, either
in Georgia or Alabama. Emory Burke joined the National Alliance
and was the Unit Coordinator for our Local Unit in Alabama up to
his death. Everyone that knew Emory Burke spoke highly of him and
he deserves a well-attended memorial service. I'll provide
details of this event as it nears.
