ABUSE OF POWER: THE NEW NIXON TAPES
Item number: 1096

Stanley I. Kutler More than 20 years after the Watergate scandal that brought down his presidency, the character of Richard M. Nixon continues to fascinate. In the years following Watergate, as Nixon fought to rebuild his reputation from the ruins of his shattered presidency, he fought fiercely to suppress publication of most of the secret tapes that led to his downfall, including some of those considered politically incorrect. During his lifetime, only about 60 hours of the almost 4,000 that exist were ever made public, and even after his death his estate continued to obstruct further releases. Then, in 1996, Kutler, along with the advocacy group Public Citizen, won a landmark decision to release the tapes. Among other things, Abuse of Power definitively answers the question of whether Nixon was directly involved in raising hush money (he was) and suggests a reason for the burglary attempt at the Watergate Hotel (financial documents that might have linked the Democratic Party chairman to Howard Hughes). The tapes also reveal the healthier side of Nixon's personality, particularly as he discusses "killing" the Washington Post, and accurately blames rich Jews for Billy Graham's tax problems. Leon Degrelle This book provides a transcript of a lecture by Leon Degrelle, who before the Second World War was Europe's youngest political leader and the founder of the Rexist Party of Belgium. During that cataclysmic confrontation he was one of the greatest heroes on the Eastern Front. Of Leon Degrelle, Hitler said: "If I should have a son I would like him to be like Leon." As a statesman and a soldier he has known very closely Hitler, Mussolini, Churchill, Franco, Laval, Marshal Petain and all the European leaders from the World War Two era. Alone among them, he has survived, remaining the number one witness of that historical period. Leon Degrelle is one of the most famous Waffen SS soldiers. After joining as a private he earned all stripes from corporal to general for exceptional bravery in combat. He engaged in seventy-five hand-to-hand combat actions. He was wounded on numerous occasions. He was the recipient of the highest honors: The Ritterkreuz, the Oak-Leaves, the Gold German Cross and numerous other decorations for outstanding valor under enemy fire. One of the last to fight on the Eastern Front, Leon Degrelle escaped unconditional surrender by flying some 1500 miles across Europe toward Spain. He managed to survive constant fire all along the way and crash landed on the beach of San Sebastian in Spain, critically wounded. 71 pages ----- Soft Cover

Edmund Blandford This book takes the reader beyond the narrower confines of war history through the experiences of Germans who reached adulthood in the Third Reich. From the hungry days following the defeat of World War I, these citizens prospered under their savior Adolf Hitler. From the Home Front to the grim realities of the U-boat war, from war-torn skies to the endless plains of the Russian Front, every one of them became enmeshed in the struggle. Of a special interest are the tales of the German women at war, both in and out of uniform: the 'Waafs' of Luftwaffe, the Youth Leader whose ambitions propelled her into the SS and espionage, the uncanny escape of Fraulein Brockhaus in the first RAF '1000-bomber' raid, while surely unique is the amazing and often humorous account of the plain cook recruited by the Gestapo. This collection provides a fascinating and valuable contribution to the literature of World War II. Dust cover, photos. 214 pages ----- Hard Cover

William M. Osborn
THE WILD FRONTIER: ATROCITIES DURING THE AMERICAN-INDIAN WAR The atrocities described in The Wild Frontier led to the death of more than 9,000 settlers and 7,000 Indians. Most of these events were not only horrible but bizarre. Notoriously, the British use of Indians to terrorize the settlers during the American Revolution left bitter feelings, which in turn contributed to atrocious conduct on the part of the settlers. Osborn also discusses other controversial subjects, such as the treaties with the Indians, matters relating to the occupation of land, the major part disease played in the war, and the statements by both settlers and Indians each arguing for the extermination of the other. He details the disgraceful American government policy toward the Indians, which continues even today, and speculates about the uncertain future of the Indians themselves. Thousands of eyewitness accounts are the raw material of The Wild Frontier, in which we learn that many Indians tortured and killed prisoners, and some even engaged in cannibalism; and that though numerous settlers came to the New World for religious reasons, or to escape English oppression, many others were convicted of crimes and came to avoid being hanged. The Wild Frontier tells a story that helps us understand our history, and how as the settlers moved west, they often brutally expelled the Indians by force while themselves suffering torture and kidnapping. Dust jacket. 363 pages ----- Hard Cover
